Resin Bound Calculator: Work Out Your Materials and Avoid Waste
Nothing eats into margin like getting your quantities wrong. Order short and you lose time on site, delay the job, and risk a patchy finish when you’re forced to work around a late delivery. But order too much and you’re tying up cash in leftover stock you did not need.
That’s exactly why we built the Durabound Resin Calculator. It’s a quick way for installers to estimate the resin and aggregate quantities needed for a resin bound job, with the option to include a border too.
Use it here: https://www.duraboundltd.co.uk/resin-calculator/
If you’re quoting a job, it’s also a handy way to sense-check quantities before you commit to a price.
Why accurate resin bound quantities matter
Most installers don’t need another theory piece. What you need is a reliable way to double-check an order before you book delivery, line up labour, and commit to a weather window.
Getting your take-off right helps you avoid three common headaches: running short halfway through a lay, over-ordering and carrying waste, and underestimating the extras that come from real-world bases. Even on well-prepped ground, there are usually small undulations, edge details, and awkward shapes that nudge your required mixes up.
What the Durabound Resin Calculator does
The calculator is designed to be simple. You enter a few details about the job and it returns an estimate of what you need for the inner area, plus an optional border area.
It also includes a contingency to help cover typical on-site realities. As noted on the calculator itself, the results include “a contingency of extra mixes to cover undulations in your driveway.” That’s useful when the base isn’t perfectly uniform, or when you want a sensible buffer so you’re not caught out.
Once calculated, the tool outputs quantities for:
- Durabound UVR Resin (6.9kg)
- Aggregates Standard Bag (2–5mm)
- Aggregates Standard Bag (1–3mm)

What you need before you start (to keep the result accurate)
The calculator only works as well as the numbers you feed it. But the good news is you don’t need anything complicated. A careful site measure and a couple of minutes of sense-checking is usually enough.
At minimum, you’ll want your total area in square metres and a contingency percentage that matches the job. If you’re including a resin border, you’ll also need the border’s linear length and the width you’re planning.
Quick pre-calc checklist:
- Total area to cover (m²)
- Contingency (%)
- If you’re adding a border: linear length (m) and width
Tip: for odd shapes, break the area into simple sections (rectangles and triangles), total them up, then enter one figure.
How to use the resin calculator (60-second walkthrough)
If you’re already on site, this is the fastest way to use it.
- Open the calculator: https://www.duraboundltd.co.uk/resin-calculator/
- Select whether the project includes a border: No Border or Include Border
- Enter the Total Area to Cover (m²)
- Enter your Contingency (%)
- If including a border, add the Linear Length of Border (m) and choose a width
- Click Calculate Resin Details
The results are shown in two blocks: Inner Area Requires and (if selected) Border Area Requires.
Contingency: not “waste”, just realistic planning
Contingency is one of those topics that can be overcomplicated. For installers, it’s usually about one thing: protecting your day.
A small buffer helps cover the jobs where the base is slightly uneven, the edges take longer than expected, or you have small level changes that aren’t obvious until you start working the area. It also helps avoid the worst-case scenario where you’re part way through and can see you’re going to run short.
Typical reasons you might increase contingency include:
- undulations in the base
- edge detailing and restraints
- multiple shapes, curves, or cut-outs
- transitions around drains, steps, and thresholds
The calculator lets you set contingency as a percentage, so you can match it to the condition of the base and the complexity of the area.
Resin borders (briefly): a small detail that can throw your numbers off
Borders are easy to underestimate because they feel like a small add-on. In reality, they’re a separate area with their own quantities, so they need measuring properly.
If your project includes a border, the calculator allows you to add it in by entering the linear length (m) and selecting a border width. The available widths are:
- 50mm
- 100mm
- 150mm
- 200mm
- 250mm
You’ll then see a dedicated Border Area Requires section in the results, so you can order with confidence rather than guessing.

After you’ve calculated: turning numbers into an order
Once you’ve got your results, the next step is making sure you’re choosing the right products and getting them booked in with enough time.

Common mistakes that lead to waste (or shortfalls)
Most quantity issues come down to one of a handful of predictable mistakes. If you avoid these, you’ll avoid most “why are we short?” moments.
- measuring area roughly and forgetting to account for curves, cut-outs, or split levels
- leaving contingency too tight for the base condition
- forgetting borders, or guessing the border length
- ordering without thinking about access and delivery timing
- starting the lay without checking you’ve got everything on site
Use the resin calculator (and stop guessing)
If you’re pricing or planning a resin bound job, the quickest win is running your take-off through the calculator before you order. It takes a minute and helps you avoid waste, avoid shortfalls, and protect your schedule.
